The Universidad de La República (Uruguay's Public University, from now on UR) is making a large effort in order to expand its Education, Research and Outreach Programs, so far largely concentrated in Montevideo, across the country. Uruguay is divided politically into 19 Departments, The Departments of Maldonado, Rocha and Treinta y Tres are located in SE Uruguay and were selected by the UR to develop new initiatives in the study of Biodiversity, Ecology and environmental. This task will be carried out in the framework of the “Centro Universitario Regional Este”, CURE. CURE will concentrate all the initiatives of the UR in the Eastern Region of our country.
CURE has a development plan and several of its key issues will be crystallized during next year. In particular, the faculty consolidated with the movement of faculty and labs from Montevideo and with the opening of several new positions at various levels, including Assistant and Full Professors. In addition, new teaching programs, initially focusing on the first years of university training, will be implemented next year.
At this time a new building of more than 3000 m2 has been started. This building includes classrooms, library, labs and offices for administration, graduate students and faculty. The faculty of the Department of Ecology and Evolution will have individual offices, student offices, and laboratory facilities according to their demands and ongoing projects. The Department will also share General Use Laboratories, Microscopy, Molecular and Microbiological Analysis, Chemical, Experimentation (2) and Ecophysiology. This building will be fully operational at the beginning of 2012. Until that time, the facilities of the Facultad de Ciencias (Montevideo) and/or temporal offices in Punta del Este (Maldonado) will be used. Vehicles for field work will also be available.
This Department will start to work in 2010 with a staff of 11 Assistant or higher level Professors.
(Note: UR has three levels of professorships, “Profesor Adjunto, grado 3”, “Profesor Agregado, grado 4”, and “Profesor Titular, grado 5”, which roughly correspond to the ranks Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor. The term “efectivo” in the current calls indicates that these are permanent positions (subject to periodical reviews). There are two other categories, called “Ayudante, grado 1” and “Asistente, grado 2”, which are two levels of assistantships.
Professors are expected to carry out teaching, research and outreach activities. Concerning teaching, each faculty member is expected to offer at least a one semester undergraduate course and a graduate course per year, and also to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. They are also expected to lead a research line with publications in mainstream journals of their research area. Outreach activities will be coordinated with an office created for this purpose and could involve, for example, activities with the local community, talks in schools and high schools, the preparation of outreach material, talks with the media, etc.
The Full Professor and two of the Assistant Professor positions are completely open and there is no preference of a particular system of study or research line. Overall academic quality will be the main focus of the evaluation. However, a third position at Assistant Professor level is open with an emphasis in the areas of coastal ecology and fisheries.
An Assistant Professor with Full Time compensation has an approximate salary of 1500 U$S/month after deductions and fees (this cover social security and health system). In addition, it is also possible to apply to the National Research System (SNI), which provide an extra income of around 500U$S/month (dependent on a categorization after an independent evaluation). A Full Professor with Full Time compensation has an approximate salary of 2000 U$S/month after deductions and fees, and can also apply to the National Research System. The National Research System has annual calls, so their compensations will not become available immediately.
From any building of the University it is possible to access to “Timbó” http://www.timbo.org.uy. This is a government website with access to several Journals and Databases. This site was created in 2009 and its resources are continuously growing.

The selection process is clearly defined for all positions in the UR. Alternatively, the Council may choose a more protracted process that includes oral presentations by some or all of the applicants. We will offer detailed information if/when needed.
Once the Council has appointed the respective candidates, there are 90 days to formally accept the position. If additional time is needed, it is possible to take up the position and request a leave of absence without pay for some time.
Next year, two more positions of Assistant Professor will be opened. They are expected to become effective in early 2011. The profile of these positions will be similar as the present ones. Additional positions are expected to be opened as the CURE becomes established.
